webhooks.xyz vs n8n
An open-source workflow automation platform with a webhook trigger node.
What n8n does well
Hundreds of integrations, a visual editor, code nodes, and a free self-hosted edition.
Where webhooks.xyz differs
- n8n is a general automation tool. A webhook is one trigger among many. webhooks.xyz is only about receiving webhooks, so inspection, verification, retries and replay are the whole product, not nodes you assemble.
- A failed n8n execution retries only if you configure it per workflow. Here the queue, retries and replay exist for every bin by default.
- n8n has no inbox view for raw requests as they arrive. You read executions after the fact.
Pick n8n when
You want multi-step automations across many apps, or you must run everything on your own servers.
Pick webhooks.xyz when
You receive webhooks from Stripe, GitHub, Shopify or any of 50+ providers and want to see, verify and deliver them reliably, for free, without building a workflow.
Feature by feature
| webhooks.xyz | n8n | |
|---|---|---|
| Instant URL that shows requests | ● | ◐The webhook node shows test executions. There is no live request list. |
| Mock responses | ● | ● |
| Signature verification | ● | ◐Header or basic auth on the trigger. HMAC verification is a code node you write. |
| Destinations with retries and replay | ●Free and Dev have the same retries and replay. Only retention differs. | ◐Retries are a per-workflow setting. Failed executions can be retried by hand. |
| Local tunnel (CLI) | ● | – |
| Failure alerts | ● | ◐An error workflow can send a message when a run fails. |
| Actions with your own keys | ● | ● |
| Full API | ● | ● |
| Inbound email parse | ● | ◐An IMAP trigger reads a mailbox you own. There is no address per webhook. |
| AI help on payloads | ●With your own key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter): explain a request, write a handler, suggest a filter, summarise a day. | ● |
| AI parsing: turn a payload or a mail into fields | ◐The assistant reads a request or a mail and answers you. An AI step that writes fields into the pipeline for each request is not built yet. | ●AI nodes (OpenAI, Anthropic and others) extract fields inside a workflow. |
| Python or JavaScript post-processing | ◐JavaScript functions and JSONata expressions on routes, in a sandbox: 100 ms, 16 MB, no network. No Python and no containers yet. | ●The Code node runs JavaScript or Python. Self-hosted, it runs in task-runner processes you control. |
| Multi-step workflows (like Zapier) | ◐In progress, off until you turn it on: a request starts steps (send, set, if, switch, foreach, wait, http, forward). No catalogue of app actions; connections and HTTP cover them. | ● |
| Import from other tools | ● | – |
| Private relay for closed networks | ●whx relay inside your network takes deliveries over one outbound connection. | ◐Self-hosting inside your network covers this case. |
| Self-hostable | ○Coming soon: one container in your own cloud account, maintained by us (Business plan). | ● |
| Free tier you can use for real | ●10 days of history and every feature with small limits. Dev has 30 days. | ◐Self-hosted is free. Cloud has no permanent free tier. |
● yes ◐ partly or with caveats ○ coming soon here – no

Move from n8n
- Keep n8n for automations. Put a bin in front of its webhook node as a destination, so n8n gets retries and a replay queue.
- Move signature checks to the bin and delete the code nodes that did them.
Questions
- Do I have to choose?
- No. A bin can forward to an n8n webhook node. You get inspection, verification and retries, and keep your workflows.
